Oldies Music
The
music of the 50's, 60's and 70's holds a special memory for those of
us who grew up with it. It was music you could sing along with, music
you could dance to, music you fell in love with. Now, there's a special
place for all of us who treasure-- Oldies Music!
Harold
“Hal” Kalin, one of the Kalin Twins of “When” fame, died August 23 in
Waldorf, Mariland. He was 71. Hal and Herb Kalin were identical twins
born in Port Jervis, New York in 1934 (Hal was the “oldest”). In the
mid-Fifties, they formed a duo to sing hits from the pre-rock'n'roll
era, especially Johnnie Ray's, but the crowds went wild when they added
some Everly Brothers numbers. The Brill Building songwriter Paul Evans
submitted "When" to the Kalin Twins' record producer, Jack
Pleis, but he placed it in a pile of reject records. The twins, however,
went to his office and they started playing the discarded songs by mistake.
The producer was too embarrassed to tell them that he had rejected it.
He let them cut it as the flip-side of “Three O’Clock Thrill”. DJs soon
soon started playing "When", though, and it became a top ten
hit. More Info
